Toy Story 3 Movie Review
Toy Story is one of my all time favorite 3D computer-animated movie series. I own the 2-disc "10th Anniversary Edition" containing Toy Story and Toy Story 2 plus additional bonus content. When I first heard the news about the third movie, Toy Story 3, I was waiting with much anticipation for the official theatrical release.
I finally got the chance to watch Toy Story 3 during a weekend last month with my cousin and I have to say the movie exceeded my expectations! We were lucky to find seats with good viewpoints in the cinema which contributed to the pleasant movie watching experience. Well enough chit chat and allow me to get straight into business: Toys Story 3.
Toys Story 3 starts off when Andy, who is now a 17 years old teenager, has lost his interest for his toys. Without giving too much away, Toy Story 3 is about transitional growing pains I suppose. And this time around, Ken and Barbie play a bigger role in the plot. Like the previous movies, friendship and co operation remain as the core values in the heart warming story. On a technical note, the CGI used in the animation is a perfect match with the story that manages to portray the vital essence of the movie flawlessly on screen.
Toy Story 3 Movie Trailer
Toy Story 3 is a movie that I strongly recommend for everyone. Even if you have not seen the first two, you can easily jump right in and enjoy the ride. I will definitely be getting the Toy Story 3 DVD when it is released.

Iron Man 2 Movie Review
I have put off watching Iron Man 2 for too long already and my chance of watching it came by during the recent long stretch of holiday break. To be honest, I have anticipated that this sequel will not surpass the original due to the casting of Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko, the main villian this time. I just get the impression that Ivan Vanko is a drunkard throughout Iron Man 2.
In a nutshell, Iron Man 2 is about how Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is coping with his deteriorating health and jugling his fame as Iron Man at the same time. The introduction of Scarlett Johansson as Natalie Rushman/Natasha Romanoff is a welcomed sight which adds the much needed diversity in the cast of female leads. Gwyneth Paltrow does a decent job reprising her role as Virginia "Pepper" Potts but her character just doesn't have the sultriness to capture the attention of the audience.
Iron Man 2 Movie Trailer
Despite its shortcomings, Iron Man 2 is enjoyable to watch. The CGI usage is on par with the first movie and some of the action scenes literary blows everything away.

Solomon Kane Movie Review
Last Saturday afternoon, my cousin came by my place after work to pickup his mom and I suggested to watch a movie before he went back. I picked out Solomon Kane and loaded it on the video player.
At first glance, Solomon Kane seemed very much like Van Helsing but minus the vampires and werewolves conflict. But as you get deeper into the story, a more suitable title for the movie should be Solomon Kane: The Origin as this movie superbly shows the origin of Solomon Kane, the evil vanquisher.
Solomon Kane Movie Trailer
One of the most outstanding feature of the movie is its atmosphere. Set in the early 1600s, Solomon Kane managed to depict the essence of the era close to perfection without heavily relying on CGI effects. In addition, James Purefoy's performance as Solomon Kane is simply amazing to say the least.

The Hangover Movie Review
I'm going through my TV series phase. And just when I'm starting to really dig Mad Men, they're off for the season. Argh.
Out of absolute boredom the other day, I went through my DVD collection and decided to pop in The Hangover. To tell you the truth, I wasn't that hopeful as any comedy post-Harold & Kumar would just pale in comparison to well, Harold & Kumar.
The Hangover movie trailer
Man, was I wrong! The Hangover was side-splittingly hilarious from beginning to end. The story is about 4 guys who were on a trip to Vegas for a bachelor's party. After waking up absolutely wasted the next morning, they discovered that the groom-to-be was missing. The movie is about them tracking down the groom's whereabouts as they have no recollection whatsoever about what took place the night before. Keep an eye out for Dr. Ken! Man, I almost passed out laughing.

District 9 Movie Review
I watched District 9 with my boo on a weekday evening. I have to say that I never heard of the movie until I watched it. I guess I must be really outside the radar of their promotion campaigns. But from the poster design and movie synopsis I was expecting it to be some kind of CGI 3D movie. Then again, during that time I was not aware that District 9 was produced by Peter Jackson.
District 9 is adapted from a 2005 short film called Alive in Joburg. In the beginning District 9 is a bit slow but when the alien spaceship is introduced, good things started to kick in motion. In brief, District 9 is a science fiction movie that centers around Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) who is tasked to relocate a race of aliens a.k.a. Prawns to a new refugee camp outside the city of Johannesburg. Things start to get violent when the Prawns showed little interest in being relocated. In some parts, District 9 is presented in a mock documentary format which I think is a nice touch. The use of CGI blends in nicely with the live action sequences especially how the Prawns are portrayed on screen.

All in all, District 9 is a good movie to spend sometime with. There are some blood and gore scenes in District 9 so parents and guardians be warned.

Bruno Movie Review
I was planning to watch Bruno with my boo but she felt disgusted with the profanity found in the movie when I told her about it. Instead I watched it with my cousin on a Sunday evening. I cannot believe I was able to finish my dinner while watching Bruno now that I look back at it.
Sacha Baron Cohen returns to the big screen, not as Borat but Brüno this time around. For those uninitiated, Brüno is a gay Austrian fashion journalist who previously had some success in Milan. Due to a mishap, Brüno got himself fired from TV reporting and then decided to travel to the USA to (try to) become "the biggest Austrian superstar since Hitler". The movie basically follows Brüno through his "trials and tribulations" in America.
Brüno Movie Trailer
Brüno can be a hit or miss depending on what your expectations are. It is vulgar and full of obscenities including a close-up on a male organ being swung around. It will crack you up more often than not using outrageous sexual gay references like how to defend yourself against dildo attacks. If you liked Borat then you will probably like Brüno too. That being said, if you are old enough to see Brüno I will probably recommend it so you can experience it first hand.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Movie Review
I guess by now post people have already seen Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (ROTF). I am one of the late adopters who only wait for the DVD release so I only watched it after the release date on 20 October 2009. I saw ROTF with my cousin on a Sunday afternoon and I think it is a good sequel to the 2007 Transformers.
ROTF takes place 2 years after the events of the first movie. And true to its title "Revenge of the Fallen" it centers on the return of the Decepticons and The Fallen to cause Solar System wide destruction by "harvesting" the Sun for energy. Truth to be told, ROTF is full of conflicting elements with the original cartoon series and this has already caused die hard Transformers fans feeling betrayed by the movie. One of the major conflicting element is how Optimus Prime is portrayed in one scene as ruthlessly destroying numerous Decepticons but in the original cartoon Optimus Prime is depicted as a heroic, brave and compassionate character who puts all his talent to use to improve the universe around him.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie trailer
Comparisons aside, ROTF is a good action movie. The CGI scenes are nicely done and the Transformers on screen is a sight to behold. If you are looking for a good pop corn movie you can do no wrong with ROTF.

Monsters vs. Aliens Movie Review
It has been quite sometime since I saw an animated movie. Since my boo is not too keen on this movie genre, still referring to it as cartoon, I think its best that I watch it alone, save me from all the unnecessary distractions. I watched Monsters vs. Aliens last night and loved every second of it!
Monsters vs. Aliens was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on 29 September 2009. Despite its artistic flair and character designs which make Monsters vs. Aliens seem like a children's movie, I think adults are going to enjoy it more. What would you do if you got hit by a meteorite on your wedding day and at the altar you suddenly grow into a giant? That is what happened to our protagonist Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon). The emotional human drama involved in the plot really touch base with reality, making the audience feel more connected with the animated characters on screen. While the animation is nothing you have not seen before, it does a good job of portraying the story to the audience.
Monsters vs. Aliens movie trailer
Monsters vs. Aliens comes highly recommended for the everyone to see. It is now part of my home entertainment library. I just hope I won't get carried away and purchase a Ginormica (Susan Murphy) figure which I will probably do so if it ever gets released into a figma.

State Of Play Movie Review
My cousin came by on Sunday for our periodic haircuts done by my aunt, his mom. After the haircut session I decided to watch State Of Play with him because its one of those movies which my boo won't enjoy watching. State Of Play is a 2009 American political thriller movie adaptation of the original six-part British television serial of the same name that aired on BBC One back in 2003.
In a nutshell, State Of Play centers on a reporter (Russell Crowe)'s investigation into the suspicious death of a Congressman(Ben Affleck)'s mistress. To make matters even more complicated, Cal McAffrey the reporter is a good friend of Congressman Stephen Collins and previously had an affair with his wife, Anne Collins(Robin Wright Penn). Rachel McAdams plays the role of Della Frye who runs a popular blog and recently turned junior political reporter. Noteworthy supporting cast members in State Of Play include Helen Mirren, Jason Bateman and Jeff Daniels.
State Of Play Movie Trailer
State Of Play starts of slow and I dare say, a bit boring to say the least. But as you get in deeper you start to care for what happens next. Russell Crowe has done a remarkable job of portraying Cal McAffrey where as Ben Affleck's role of Congressman Stephen Collins comes in a close second place. State Of Play is full of twists and turns especially towards the end and this directly bumps up the story a notch or two. I would recommend State Of Play for those who enjoy political thrillers and those who do not mind sitting through the slow first half of the movie before getting to the better second half.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Movie Review
I have been following the X-Men movie series since the first X-Men was released in 2000. So when the latest fourth movie in the series X-Men Origins: Wolverine was released in 2009 I was eagerly waiting for my chance to watch it. I managed to watch it with my boo on Wednesday night and IMHO X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the most memorable entry in the X-Men movie series yet.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a prequel, set about 10-19 years prior to the first movie, X-Men. It centers on the early beginnings of James Logan (Hugh Jackman) who will eventually become Wolverine, one of the most fearsome member of the X-Men. The movie successfully highlights the love and hate rivalry between James Logan and his half-brother Victor Creed(Liev Schreiber) who will eventually become Sabretooth. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is full of explosive action sequences with a little dab of romance thrown in the mix for good measure. One thing which I find a bit awkward is the bathroom scene where Logan was inspecting his adamantium claws. The cgi and sound effect in this scene are a bit off compared to the rest of the movie.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine Movie Trailer
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a good action movie. The human drama in the plot compliments the movie quite well. I would recommend it more so if you are an X-Men fan.

Dance Flick Movie Review
I think all of us have watched a few movies which we know before hand are bad but we watch them anyway. For me its mainly the American parody movie genre. My latest foray into the stated genre is Dance Flick written by the Wayans Brothers and directed by their nephew Damien Dante Wayans.
My boo came by on a hot Saturday afternoon and we sat through Dance Flick. I wonder why they did not name the movie Dance Movie instead of Dance Flick seeing their previous releases like Disaster Movie and Epic Movie. Anyway Dance Flick centers on a girl named Megan White (Shoshana Bush) who is forced to move in with her father in the inner-city area due to a series of tragic circumstances. In her new school, she started to rekindle her interest in dancing by signing up for the ballet classes and met a street gang member called Thomas (Damon Wayans, Jr). Obviously they become dance partners and eventually fall in love.
Dance Flick Movie Trailer
Some of the parodies found in Dance Flick include Stomp The Yard, Footloose, Step Up, Mamma Mia!, Hairspray and Enchanted which I think has been way overused. A word of caution though, Dance Flick contains a fair amount of profanity and crude sexual content which includes a beat boxing female organ. Depending on your expectations when watching Dance Flick you can either give it a serious miss or a below average pass. In my case, I have to say that curiosity killed the cat because that was my sole driving force of watching Dance Flick from the start to the very end.

O Jerusalem Movie Review
I watched O Jerusalem with my cousin last Saturday. He just got a new car and he drove by to my house for a spin. I was not going to watch O Jerusalem on my own so it was good timing that he came over.
O Jerusalem is a Belgian war drama movie directed by Elie Chouraqui and produced by Jeffrey Konvitz. O Jerusalem stars JJ Feild and Saïd Taghmaoui as strangers who became the best of friends. Bobby Goldman (JJ Feild) is an American Jew whereas Saïd Chahine (Saïd Taghmaoui) is an Arab and their relationship became tarnished soon after the U. N. voted for the Partition Plan for Palestine, essentially dividing Palestine into two provisional states, one Jewish and the other Arab.
Even though I generally do not watch war historical movies, I find that O Jerusalem can appeal to the general audience in the sense that it focuses on human emotional drama. The lives of the friends, families and lovers of the two main protagonists are very well depicted and compliment the main story plot very well. The violence and brutality of war and human conflict are not over glorified and provide a close to reality perspective and a sense of realism to the audience.
O Jerusalem Movie Trailer
If you enjoy historical dramas like my cousin then you will like O Jerusalem. If you are just curious about the movie I recommend that you watch it on a rental. My Love For Life movie review rating for O Jerusalem: 3/5

Crank: High Voltage Movie Review
I was asking my boo to choose which movie to watch last night between Crank: High Voltage or X-Men Origins: Wolverine. To be honest I was more inclined towards X-Men Origins: Wolverine but my boo has a mild dislike towards comic super heroes movie adaptations. Based on the title of this movie review its a giveaway answer to which movie she chose to watch last night: Crank: High Voltage.
Jason Statham returns as Chev Chelios in Crank: High Voltage which is a direct sequel to Crank (2006). Crank: High Voltage is a 2009 American action/thriller movie written and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor who both also did the same for the previous movie. Crank: High Voltage is rated R due to the strong pervasive language and nudity as well as graphical sexual content and not forgetting the huge amounts of blood and gore found in the movie.
For those uninitiated, Chev Chelios is a super tough guy one man army who is at the top of the triads and mobsters most wanted list. Someone stole his heart (literary) and he has to find it and get it back inside his body before his implanted artificial heart runs out of power. I think the directors and producers wanted to make Crank: High Voltage a super extreme "Pushing it to the max!" adrenaline rushing action movie in which they succeeded.
I must stress that Crank: High Voltage is strictly not for the younger audiences and those who are offended by onscreen nudity. And every minute in the movie you are bound to hear some pervasive language in the dialogue. Here is a excerpt from the imdb parental guide on Crank: High Voltage: "200-something f-bombs and over 2-dozen s-words lead the pack. In addition, there are 4 or 5 uses of c**t."
Crank: High Voltage Movie Trailer
If you enjoyed the first movie then you will feel right at home with Crank: High Voltage. Generally Crank: High Voltage is an extreme action movie which is tailored for the more mature audience in mind. I personally feel that it has overused the f-bomb too much but seeing the nature of the movie it is unavoidable.

17 Again Movie Review
I watched 17 Again with my Boo on a Thursday evening. Prior to that I had anticipated that it was going to be another teen movie as Zac Efron is playing the leading role as the 17 years old Mike "Mark" O'Donnell, the protagonist. Surprisingly 17 Again turned out to be rather entertaining to watch.
17 Again is a 2009 American comedy movie directed by Burr Steers. It stars Matthew Perry, Zac Efron, Leslie Mann and Thomas Lennon among others. 17 Again centers around Mike O'Donnell who was unhappy with how his life turned out due to the major decisions he made in the past. Through a magical twist of fate Mike found himself transformed back into his 17 years old self thus being given another chance to redo his life changing decision. You just have to watch the movie yourself to find out what happens in the end.
17 Again Movie Trailer
It is nice to see Matthew Perry back onscreen again. Zac Efron did a good job playing the role of the 17 years old Mike O'Donnell. There are some awkward scenes between him and Leslie Mann which he managed to pull off nicely. All in all 17 Again is a good movie to spend an evening with.

Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li Movie Review
At first, I thought that watching Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li(thereafter referred to as TLOCL) with my boo was a bad idea because its a live-action movie based on the Street Fighter video game series. But surprisingly TLOCI turned out to be rather watchable despite receiving overwhelmingly negative reviews from the general public. Here is My Love For Life movie review of Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li.
On Thursday evening I had a somewhat important decision to make concerning which movie to watch first: TLOCL or Angels And Demons? Since my boo had no preference either way, I went with TLOCL because I wanted to get over the bad before commencing with the good (bad: TLOCL, good: Angels And Demons, based on box office ranking and performance). TLOCI stars Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li and follows her life since childhood. It shows the audience how Chun-Li has grown up to become the beautiful and skillful martial arts master through the life changing series of circumstances which were placed upon her.
Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li Movie Trailer
In TLOCI, there are several scenes showing the exotic locations in Bangkok, Thailand and Hong Kong, China. They are good eye candies for TLOCI and compliment the story well. As for the fight scenes, they are done in an adequate manner, nothing spectacular or note worthy. But one corny aspect of the fight scenes is the ultimate move or finishing move which is the classic fireball attack. Did someone say Dragonball I hear?
Behind The Scenes of Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li
TLOCI is a watchable action movie. If you are a fan of Kristin Kreuk then you might love this movie. If you are a fan of the video game then you might have lots to complain about the movie and how it deviates from the video game series. But if you are just looking for a movie to watch I would still recommend TLOCI.

Equilibrium Movie Review
I had another double dose of straight movie watching with my cousin on Saturday afternoon. The first movie that we watched is actually recommended by my sister which is a 2002 sci-fi action movie, Equilibrium. To tell you the truth I have never heard of Equilibrium before this and was quite surprised by the fact that Christian Bale, the current Batman plays the protagonist.
Equilibrium is set in a futuristic dystopian(vision of a society in which conditions of life are miserable and characterized by poverty, oppression, war, violence, disease, pollution, and/or the abridgement of human rights, resulting in widespread unhappiness, suffering, and other kinds of pain.~thanks wiki^^) city-state called Libria. In this age and time, mankind has blamed human emotion as the root cause of conflict in the world and thus all citizens of Libria are required to inject themselves with regular dosages of an emotion-suppressing drug called Prozium. The protagonist of Equilibrium, John Preston(Christian Bale) is the highest ranking officer in the elite Grammaton Clerics which is tasked to locate and destroy all emotionally stimulating material(classified as EC-10 for emotional content) and to stop "sense-offenders"- people guilty of feeling emotions.
I have to say that Equilibrium is a very good sci-fi action movie. Christian Bale's portrayal of John Preston is outstanding and the high adrenaline slick gun-fighting martial art (a.k.a. Gun Kata) scenes are just mind blowing! Just check out the trailer below for a sneak peek!

I must have been too preoccupied in 2002 to let Equilibrium slip under my radar then. This is now part of my personal DVD collection. I recommend that you check it out for yourself. My Love For Life movie review rating for Equilibrium: 4/5

Angels & Demons Movie Review
Now here is a movie that I was looking forward to watch. The so called sequel to to The Da Vinci Code: Angels & Demons. The weird part is that this movie is actually based on the novel of the same name by Dan Brown which was published first and takes place chronologically before The Da Vinci Code. Another evident case of alterations done through the premise of novel to movie adaptation. My boo was with me when I saw Angels & Demons and here is my take on the movie.
Tom Hanks is back reprising his role as Robert Langdon, a Symbologist professor at Harvard University. One of the things that I like about Angels & Demons is how it begins by focusing on the initialization of the Large Hadron Collider. This greatly gives a sense of realism to the movie as the Large Hadron Collider has gained considerable attention from the public even influencing pop culture such as Angels & Demons. One of the best way of explaining what the Large Hadron Collider is is via the Large Hadron Rap:
Now back to Angels & Demons, the inclusion of the Large Hadron Collider in the movie adaptation is an alteration from the source novel. Another divergence from the novel is how Ewan McGregor's character, the Camerlengo Patrick McKenna changed from Italian to being Northern Irish to accommodate the Scottish actor. For me these changes do not hinder my enjoyment of the movie but they can cause quite a bit of racket for those that have read the original novel. Angels & Demons can drag on a little too long at times but that is to be expected since it requires more time to unravel the shocking twists and turns found throughout the movie. To sum up the plot, Angels & Demons is about the age old conflict between Science and Christianity.
Angels & Demons Movie Trailer
For those who like the first movie The Da Vinci Code, you will probably like Angels & Demons as well so watch it. For those who are just curious about the movie, I recommend that you watch it too.
My Love For Life Movie Review rating for Angels & Demons: 4/5.

The Haunting in Connecticut Movie Review
There is just something even more frightening than watching a scary movie. That is watching a scary movie which is based on a true story! The thought that some of the events in the movie actually took place in real life really drive chills down my spine... brrrrr!
The Haunting in Connecticut is a 2009 horror movie that is based on the true story of the Snedeker family's encounter with the paranormal in Southington, Connecticut. The Haunting in Connecticut follows the Campbells as they move in to a rented house which is closer to the hospital which Matt Campbell(Kyle Gallner) has been getting treatment for cancer. Virginia Madsen plays the matriarch role of Sara Campbell who is looking out for Matt as he undergoes the painful trial therapy sessions. As they stay longer in the house the Campbells start to feel a supernatural presence around them.
The Haunting in Connecticut Movie Trailer
The Haunting in Connecticut is a good horror movie as it manages to blend in believable human emotional drama with the spook fest. A family going through financial hardships to fund the treatment of their eldest son's health condition adds an extra layer of realism to the movie.

Knowing Movie Review
I started watching Knowing with my boo on Thursday evening at 7:30PM but had to stop halfway during the movie because my boo was scared of the "whispers in the head" element especially at night. So we continued the movie where we left off on Saturday afternoon joined by my cousin. I think it is a good strategy to watch scary movies during the day as they seem less frightening.
Knowing is an American sci-fi movie directed by Alex Proyas. It stars Nicholas Cage as Professor Jonathan "John" Koestler who is a widower and teaches astrophysics at MIT. Things start to get eerie and freaky after his only son Caleb (Chandler Canterbury) received an envelope from a time capsule buried 50 years ago at his school, the William Dawes Elementary School in Lexington, Massachusetts. In a nutshell, Knowing is about disastrous prophecies coming true.
Knowing Movie Trailer
Knowing is entertaining to watch. It keeps you guessing what is going to happen in the end, hoping for something different than the obvious conclusion. Knowing can be spooky early on with many mysterious and unexplained elements in the story. Even after the ending there are still a few pieces missing from completing the puzzle.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic Movie Review
I had a very nice movie session with my Boo last Saturday as the movie we were watching turned out a lot better than I thought it would be. Confessions Of A Shopaholic was at the top of my Boo's most wanted to watch movie list. I cannot blame her for that as the movie has all the right elements to attract audiences from the fairer sex: fashion magazines, girlfriends bonding, romance and last but not least, shopping!
Confessions Of A Shopaholic is a 2009 romantic comedy movie based on the Shopaholic novel series by Sophie Kinsella. It stars Isla Fisher as Rebecca Bloomwood, the protagonist who is a shopaholic in denial. Her compulsive shopping has amassed her $9000 in debt which she has accumulated through all 12 of her credit cards. Needless to say, throughout the movie Rebecca's shopaholic behavior has brought her much conflict in her life with friends and family alike. This movie has managed to take a lighter look on the negative effects of overspending and turning it into something interesting to watch.
Confessions Of A Shopaholic movie trailer
When I first saw Isla Fisher appear as Rebecca Bloomwood I could have sworn that she is the same person playing Giselle the Enchanted princess in Enchanted. But after further research on the Internet I have been proven wrong. But I did find out that I am not the only person that thought the same. Isla Fisher and Amy Adams (Giselle the Enchanted princess) do share a striking resemblance to each other. Just check out the photos below:
While you are at it also check out this great guide on The Definitive Differences between Isla Fisher And Amy Adams.
Confessions Of A Shopaholic is a good romantic comedy movie. It is worthy to be added to my personal DVD collection. My Love For Life movie review rating for Confessions Of A Shopaholic: 4/5
