Under One Umbrella

Arguably the most popular song of 2007 is Rihanna's "Umbrella".

I remember dismissing (and dissing!) it as another annoying club track when it was first released.

Then, when Mandy Moore did a cover of the song sometime this year, I found myself liking the song more and more.

From there, I discovered a couple of interesting covers of the song.

Rihanna recently released an acoustic version of "Umbrella". I personally prefer Marie Digby's version. Which cover do you do you prefer?

Sunshine was released in the cinemas on July 20, 2007. Sunshine is a suspence sci-fi movie directed by Danny Boyle based on a screenplay written by Alex Garland.

With an international cast including Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong and Michelle Yeoh, Sunshine tells the story of how a spaceship with a crew of 8 is trying to reignite the Earth's diminishing sun in the year 2057. Standard "trapped in space with no where to escape while trying to save the world" fan fare is in play here.

Sunshine is an average suspence sci-fi movie at its best but with the recent shortage of space sci-fi movie releases, Sunshine is able to satisfy the demand.

The Last Mimzy was released in the cinemas on March 23, 2007. Directed by Bob Shaye and featuring an ensemble cast including Joely Richardson, Timothy Hutton, Michael Clarke Duncan and Rainn Wilson, The Last Mimzy is a wonderful science fiction family film.

The Last Mimzy is about how two children came in contact with a mysterious box containing strange devices which they assumed to be toys. Little did they know that these "toys" were actually high tech devices sent from the distant future to find untainted 21st century DNA which future mankind can utilize to rectify a fatal mutation in their DNA.

The Last Mimzy starts off slow at first but peaks at the end. It is a good movie for the whole family to watch on a cosy evening but some parts of it might be a bit scary for the youngsters.

Live Free Or Die is a dark comedy released in 2006. It stars Aaron Stanford as John "Rugged" Rudgate as a clueless wannabe criminal who is the laughing stock of his town. Written and directed by Gregg Kavet and Andy Robin (both writers of Seinfeld) Live Free Or Die is a watchable movie on those boring evenings.

Live Free Or Die is mostly slow moving but picks up the action slightly towards the end. Do not expect much from this movie and you might find it to be a little entertaining. Live Free Or Die looks and feels like a low budget comedy movie and it's just that.

I am a TMNT fan since the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series started airing on TV in the early 1990s. And when I heard that the latest computer animated movie TMNT was going to be released on March 23, 2007 I was estatic!

TMNT takes place after the original live action films chronologically. We see how each of the individual turtles which we have come to love over the years, get by their own lives and growing further apart from each other.

Voiced by a stellar cast including Patrick Steward, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Zhang Ziyi, TMNT features great CGI action scenes and clever use of special effects. TMNT is a fantastic movie for all to watch!

Having never seen any of the original series before, I didn't know what to expect from Reno 911!: Miami. At best, I thought this might be another Police Academy clone. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! Reno 911!: Miami is a hilariously funny movie about a bunch of police officers from the Reno Sheriffs Department who under special circumstances found themselves to be the only available police force to provide law enforcement to all of Miami.

With guest stars like Danny Devito and The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) along with the regular cast of Reno 911! expect lots of frentic funnies and over the top comedic scenes that will make you laugh your hats off. Bear in mind that Reno 911!: Miami is best suited for adult audiences only.

Spiderman 3 Movie Review

Here is one of the movies I have been eagerly anticipating to watch: Spiderman 3. It was released in the cinemas on May 4, 2007 breaking most of the opening weekend records internationally. Directed by Sam Raimi, Spiderman 3 stars Tobey Maguire reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spiderman.

Spiderman 3 picks up the storyline left behind in Spiderman 2, Peter now more in charge of his life and his relationship with Mary Jane (Kristen Dunst). But his relationship with Harry Osborn (James Franco) is strained due to the fact that Harry thought it was Spiderman who murdered his father. Spiderman 3 features more great action scenes and more bad guys with the introduction of Flint Marko (Thomas Haden Church) who eventually becomes The Sandman and Eddie Brock, Jr. (Topher Grace) who transforms into Venom.

Spiderman 3 is a great movie for all to watch. Whether you are an existing Spiderman fan or not, Spiderman 3 comes highly recommended.

River Queen Movie Review

River Queen was released in the cinemas in New Zealand in 2005. This New Zealand film is directed by Vincent Ward and received mixed reviews from critics during its opening.

Set in 1868 New Zealand, River Queen centers around a young Irish woman, Sarah trapped in between her love of a man and war of the British and Maori during the British colonization campaign of New Zealand. Things get complicated as Sarah is impregnated by a Maori man and eventually gives birth to a son.

River Queen starts off pretty boring and confusing but slowly gains momentum. It is a passable action, adventure and drama movie but do not have high expectations before watching or you will be disappointed.

Pathfinder Movie Review

Pathfinder was released in the cinemas on April 13, 2007. Its subsequent DVD release is scheduled to be on July 31, 2007.

Pathfinder is an action-adventure movie telling the tale of the conflict between the brutal Vikings and the Native Americans. It follows the life of a young viking boy who was the sole survivor of a Viking shipwreck who got stranded at the shore of Native America.

The boy got taken in to a nearby Native American tribe and there he spent 15 years of his life until the Vikings came and massacred his entire tribe. He barely escaped from the Vikings with his life when he was rescued by a neighbouring tribe.

Pathfinder contains brutal violence and hence it is not suitable for young audiences. Pathfinder is a good action-adventure movie with a subtle romantic tale thrown in the mix.

Free Jimmy Movie Review

Free Jimmy was released in the cinemas on March 17, 2006. Free Jimmy is the first computer animated film from Norway and is Norway's second most expensive movie to date (16 Million USD).

Written and directed by Norwegian Christopher Nielsen, Free Jimmy has a running time of approximately 80 minutes. With vocal talents from Woody Harrelson, Kyle MacLachlan, Simon Pegg and Jay Simpson among others, Free Jimmy puts a more darker and mature tune to the generic computer animated feature film genre.

Free Jimmy tells the tale of an elephant, Jimmy who was drugged so that he can be controlled by his handlers in the circus. The plot thickens as smugglers stashed stolen drugs surgically into Jimmy and a few desperate parties try hard to get their hands on Jimmy.

Free Jimmy is intended for a more mature audience. It has an interesting art direction which is a diversion from the normal cute and cuddly on screen characters from mainstream CGI movies.

Happily N'Ever After Movie Review

Happily N'Ever After was released in the cinemas on January 5, 2007. Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, Happily N'Ever After is a computer animated film that brings a different plot twist to the original story plots.

With a strong cast of vocal talents such as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Sigourney Weaver and Michael McShane, Happily N'Ever After mixes the original fairy tales together tilting the scale of their respective happy ending towards a more evil outlook.

The plot of Happily N'Ever After seems a bit generic ala Shrek and Hoodwinked but nevertheless will appeal to the younger audiences. Happily N'Ever After is a passable CGI movie to watch for the whole family but it is no Shrek.

Norbit Movie Review

Norbit is a comedy movie starring Eddie Murphy in which he plays three leading roles. Norbit was released in the cinemas on February 9, 2007. The movie also stars Marlon Wayans, Cuba Gooding, Jr, Eddie Griffin and Thandie Newton.

Norbit follows the life of an orphan, Norbit, of how he was abandoned by his parents at an orphanage/Chinese restaurant owned by Mr. Wong. The movie portrays Norbit as he grew up in the orphanage and how he got entangled with the massively overweight Rasputia, of whom he married under circumstantial consequences. Later, Norbit encountered his childhood sweetheart Kate (Thandie Newton) and eventually broke free from the iron claw crutches of Rasputia and her three bully brothers.

Norbit is the 7th movie which Eddie Murphy has played multiple roles in. I am very much impressed with his performance as Mr. Wong in Norbit. Mr Wong's character in the movie is very hilarious though some of his wise cracking jokes might be offensive. All and all, Norbit is a good comedy to watch to spend an evening with.

Blood And Chocolate Movie Review

Released on January 26, 2007, Blood And Chocolate is a movie based on the young adult novel of the same name written by Annette Curtis Klause. Blood And Chocolate was later released on DVD on June 11, 2007.

Blood And Chocolate is about the forbidden love between a human man and a female werewolf (werewolves are called loup-garou in the novel and the movie). Vivian, the female loup-garou fell in love with Aiden, an artist who coincidentally is researching the legend of the loup-garou. They faced fierce objections from the other loup-garou and physical conflicts eventually broke out.

Blood And Chocolate is like Underworld without the great action scenes and the superb performances from a stellar cast of actors. Blood And Chocolate leans more towards a Romeo & Juliet style plot but with werewolves and average looking special effects.

Code Name: The Cleaner was released in the cinemas on January 5, 2007. This action comedy movie stars Cedric Antonio Kyles (Cedric the Entertainer), Lucy Liu and Nicollette Sheridan among others.

Here is the plot of Code Name: The Cleaner in a nutshell: amnesiac janitor Jake Rogers (Cedric Antonio Kyles) woke up with a dead body next to him in a hotel room. With various parties out to get him because he is the only person who knows the location of the stolen computer chip, Jake became unsure of who is friend or foe. Then he came in contact with Gina (Lucy Liu) who is an undercover FBI agent assigned to the case. The two then team up to uncover the case and locate the missing computer chip.

Kelly Clarkson: My December Music Review

Being the original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson has build up a remarkable career as a recording artist. Her much anticipated third studio album, My December will be released on June 26, 2007.

Every track in My December either has been written or co-written by Kelly Clarkson herself. My December is the first album that Kelly Clarkson has steered the musical direction of. Having heard My December for at least 10 times, I have to say that Kelly Clarkson has outdone herself yet again with another great album! The songs in My December might be darker than her previous offerings but Kelly Clarkson's vocal talents and musical prowess in the performance of the songs has risen above everything else.

Catch Me If You Can Movie Review

Catch Me If You Can was released in the cinemas on December 25, 2002. Based on the true life story written in a book by Frank Abagnale Jr. himself, Catch Me If You Can is directed by Steven Spielberg.

Catch Me If You Can chronicles Frank Abagnale Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he tries to break free from the life of debt as he had witnessed from his father Frank Sr. (Christopher Walken) by forging bank cheques. Tom Hanks plays FBI agent Carl Hanratty who is hot on Frank Abagnale Jr.'s trail.

Catch Me If You Can is a mixture of drama, biography and crime genres. It is very interesting to watch as we see how DiCaprio quickly switched professions to impersonate (from being a pilot to a doctor to a lawyer!) while trying to throw Tom Hanks off his tail. Even though its dated (5 years ago), Catch Me If You Can is and always will be a great movie to watch.

Because I Said So Movie Review

Because I Said So was released in the cinemas on February 2, 2007. Because I Said So stars Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore as mother and daughter in this romantic comedy film.

In Because I Said So, Daphne (Diane Keaton) is a meddling overprotective mother who tries desperately to set her daughter Milly (Mandy Moore) up with the right man so that Milly won't end up in life following her footsteps. I have to say that Because I Said So is definitely a chic flick. Guys might watch it because Mandy Moore is in it. But the plot which centers around the mother-daughter relationship of Diane and Mandy might not be the cup of tea for most of the male demographic.

All in all, Because I Said So is a watchable movie, provided of course you got some spare time to spend on it. Possibly a good movie for couples to watch... maybe.

Caffeine Movie Review

Caffeine saw its limited cinema release on August 10, 2006. Caffeine is meant to be a comedy about human relationships, all taken place in fictional Black Cats Cafe somewhere in London.

Caffeine stars Mena Suvari, Katherine Heigl, Breckin Meyer and Mike Vogel among others. The plot centers around the relationship of the staffs working in Black Cats Cafe and also the visiting patrons. The situation in the cafe is almost always hectic with high emotions thrown into the mixture of the busy near chaotic conditions.

Caffeine is like the British take on the American movie "Waiting..." Caffeine is watchable on a boring evening when you got nothing better to do.

The Last Samurai Movie Review

The Last Samurai was released in the cinemas on December 5, 2003. Although its been 4 years since its release, The Last Samurai remains one of the better movies I have seen to date.

The Last Samurai stars Tom Cruise as an American soldier who got enlisted to aid in training the new modern Japanese Imperial Army to curbing the last resistance of the old Samurai factions of Japan. During the course of The Last Samurai, Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) came in close contact with the Samurai way of living and faces personal and emotional conflicts in choosing sides. Evidently he stayed behind with the Samurai faction and saw the last battle through the end.

Tom Cruise has portrayed stellar performance in playing his character Nathan Algren in The Last Samurai. Let it be known that The Last Samurai refers to Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) the leader of the Samurai faction, not Nathan Algren(Tom Cruise). The Last Samurai is a must watch for all (meeting the R MPAA rating) to see.

The Good German Movie Review

The Good German was released in the cinemas on December 8, 2006. It stars Tobey Maguire (Spiderman), George Clooney and Cate Blanchett. The Good German was nominated for an Academy Award for best feature film adaptation of a novel.

The whole movie is in black and white to depict the era of post World War 2. I'm not much into the Film Noir genre but I was compelled to watch The Good German because of its stellar castings. The Good German is basically about a murder investigation set in post-war Berlin where George Clooney is trying to find answers for a crime involving his driver, Tobey Maguire and his former mistress, Cate Blanchett.

The Good German is watchable but it could have been better. The pace of the film is a bit too slow for my taste, then again I am not too keen on the film noir genre.

Ghost Rider Movie Review

Ghost Rider was released in the cinemas on February 16, 2007. This superhero movie adaptation of the fictional Marvel Comics character Ghost Rider stars Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider and Eva Mendes as his romantic interest Roxanne Simpson.

Here is the Ghost Rider plot in a nutshell. Guy gave his soul to the devil to heal his father's chronic disease. The father recovered from the illness but then died in an accident during a bike stunt. Several years later, the devil returns to collect the debt from the guy: to become the Ghost Rider a.k.a. the devil's bounty hunter.

The major part of Ghost Rider is centering on the action sequences during the good-bad guy (Ghost Rider) vs the bad guy fights. The CGI effects is great, especially when Johnny Blaze transforms into the Ghost Rider. Ghost Rider is an OK movie, watch it if you got nothing better to watch.

Music and Lyrics Movie Review

Music and Lyrics was released in the cinemas on February 14, 2007. It was meant to be a romantic comedy film that couples could go watch during Valentine's day. Hugh Grant plays an 80s currently down on his luck pop star, Alex Fletcher and Drew Barrymore plays his romantic interest, a former English literature university major who has a niche for writing lyrics, Sophie Fisher.

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore both actually sing in Music and Lyrics. I have to say they are both wonderful singers. And they both played their parts in Music and Lyrics with remarkable finess and truly believable characters on screen. This movie comes highly recommend by me as a great feel good movie with fantastic entertainment value.
